News2A Talks with John Commerford, Executive Director of NRA Institute for Legislative Action

John Commerford on NRA’s Direction, Elections, and Member Engagement

After having met at the 2025 Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, John Commerford and News2A got together to chat about the National Rifle Association. John is the newly appointed Executive Director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA). He shared insights into the NRA’s legislative efforts, election strategies, and commitment to transparency and accountability to the organization’s members.

Legislative Impact and Elections

Commerford highlighted the NRA’s significant role in the 2024 elections, underscoring an eight-figure investment that contributed to a high voter turnout among gun owners, helping secure a pro-Second Amendment president and Congress. He discussed the strategic focus on low-propensity gun owners in battleground states, which was pivotal in key races like those in Pennsylvania. Looking ahead, Commerford emphasized the importance of the upcoming state races, particularly the critical Supreme Court election in Wisconsin, which could influence national political landscapes through redistricting. His vision for the NRA under his leadership includes continuing this aggressive approach to elections, ensuring that the voice of gun owners is heard loud and clear.

NRA Transparency and Accountability (NRA 2.0)

Addressing concerns about transparency and member trust, Commerford spoke about the NRA’s commitment to good governance. With the new leadership, spearheaded by CEO Doug Hamlin, there’s been a palpable shift towards more accountability and transparency, which some are calling NRA 2.0. Commerford encouraged members to engage directly by attending the annual meeting in Atlanta or voting in board elections, emphasizing the organization’s shift towards more inclusive and transparent practices. He also noted the NRA’s ongoing efforts to rebuild trust amidst past challenges, especially following legal battles that tested the organization’s resilience and governance. Under Hamlin’s direction, the NRA has committed to internal and external auditing, ensuring member resources are used effectively and efficiently.

Collaboration and Future Commitment

Commerford expressed the NRA’s willingness to collaborate with other Second Amendment groups on litigation and legislative fronts. He mentioned groups such as the Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC), Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), and more. He discussed the organization’s approach to lobbying and political spending, explaining how the NRA aims to maximize the impact of member contributions through strategic engagements. This collaborative spirit is a hallmark of the new leadership’s strategy to fortify the Second Amendment’s standing in legal and legislative arenas.

For gun owners, particularly in states like New Jersey, which showed unexpected political shifts, Commerford assured an increased focus on supporting pro-Second Amendment candidates, especially in significant off-year elections. The new NRA leadership plans to leverage these opportunities to influence state policies and protect gun rights.

Engagement Beyond Finances

Beyond financial support, Commerford urged members to stay engaged through social media, email alerts for grassroots activism, and direct communication with elected officials, which he sees as crucial for influencing legislation at local and national levels. He highlighted new initiatives under the leadership of Doug Hamlin, like increased member interaction through town halls and transparent updates on NRA activities, ensuring that members feel part of the decision-making process.

This interview not only sheds light on the NRA’s current initiatives under new leadership but also reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding Second Amendment rights through a more transparent and member-involved approach. With a renewed focus on member engagement, effective governance, and strategic legislative action, the NRA, under Commerford and Hamlin, aims to strengthen its position as a leading defender of gun rights.
