Minnesota Senator Introduces Bill That Would Ban Most Semi-Automatic Firearms

A semi-automatic rifle, just like the type Minnesota is considering a ban on.

In layman’s terms: A new bill introduced by a Minnesota Democrat would ban nearly all semi-automatic firearms in the state if it were to become law.

Democrats are once again un-ironically leading the anti-civil rights charge with Minnesota Senator Jen McEwen (D) introducing a bill this week that would ban most semi-automatic firearms.

SF 1596 would ban all sales and transfers of pretty nearly every single semi-automatic rifle, many shotguns, and even some pistols. The bill was proposed for Minnesota’s 94th Legislature (2025 – 2026) and the text was posted on February 17.

As with many such measures, the bill is introduced as, “A bill for an act relating to public safety” and includes a manufactured category of firearms it calls “semiautomatic military-style assault weapons”. The bill identifies a long list of firearms banned by name (similar to New Jersey law), along with a “definition” that borrows from features of those firearms. The banned firearms include:

  • (i) Avtomat Kalashnikov (AK-47) semiautomatic rifle type;
  • (ii) Beretta AR-70 and BM-59 semiautomatic rifle types;
  • (iii) Colt AR-15 semiautomatic rifle type;
  • (iv) Daewoo Max-1 and Max-2 semiautomatic rifle types;
  • (v) Famas MAS semiautomatic rifle type;
  • (vi) Fabrique Nationale FN-LAR and FN-FNC semiautomatic rifle types;
  • (vii) Galil semiautomatic rifle type;
  • (viii) Heckler & Koch HK-91, HK-93, and HK-94 semiautomatic rifle types;
  • (ix) Ingram MAC-10 and MAC-11 semiautomatic pistol and carbine types;
  • (x) Intratec TEC-9 semiautomatic pistol type;
  • (xi) Sigarms SIG 550SP and SIG 551SP semiautomatic rifle types;
  • (xii) SKS with detachable magazine semiautomatic rifle type;
  • (xiii) Steyr AUG semiautomatic rifle type;
  • (xiv) Street Sweeper and Striker-12 revolving-cylinder shotgun types;
  • (xv) USAS-12 semiautomatic shotgun type;
  • (xvi) Uzi semiautomatic pistol and carbine types; or
  • (xvii) Valmet M76 and M78 semiautomatic rifle types;

The bill’s sweeping definition would make many shotguns and even numerous, popular semi-automatic pistols illegal.

We reported on a similar measure introduced in Colorado in January that recently passed the Senate in a 19-15 vote and is likely on its way to the Governor’s desk for consideration.
